Going green in a brown housing market

Posted by Erin Ratay on Sunday, November 8th, 2009 at 11:01am.

I am often asked, “I’m thinking of selling my home. How much value is there in making my home green?” There is no precise answer to that question in terms of value when you go to sell your home. But I can tell you that many buyers appreciate the enhancements as a “feel good” reaction when they are considering buying your home. And in this brown (read down) housing market, anything that makes a buyer “feel good” about buying your home is a real plus. So whether you are thinking of selling your home or just want to see some added savings on your utility bill this winter, I strongly encourage you to have an energy audit performed (see the websites below for references) to see where you should focus your $$’s, and take advantage of generous rebates currently being offered for such things as insulation, replacing old furnaces and water heaters, and solar. For example, Xcel Energy is offering substantial rebates on home insulation and energy efficient improvements to your home. Natural gas customers can get double the rebate of 20% of the project cost up to $600 total. This is a limited time offer. Insulation work must be done by an approved contractor and completed between Sept. 1 and Oct. 15, 2009. For complete details check out the Xcel Energy website at http://www.ResponsibleByNature.com/change and click on "Rebates & Programs". But that’s not all! For a complete list of home energy efficiency rebates currently being offered to Boulder County residents, explore the City of Boulder’s ClimateSmart program’s website www.beClimateSmart.com/programs, then click At Home and then Rebates & Financing. Also, check out one of my favorite websites http://www.conservationcenter.org/ for more ideas on how to make your home more energy efficient, and interesting and fun upcoming events.

Boulder is one of the greenest cities in the world. Why not tout your energy efficiency to potential buyers in a brown housing market? And, not only will you save on your energy bills but you will be helping to reduce your carbon footprint.
